'05 1200GS Fast Idle Problem
Tim,

I have a 2005 R1200GS with approximately 2500 miles on the odo. Recently, after start-up, the engine has begun to rev between 3500-4000 rpm without any input (I've taken my right hand completely off the grip) from the throttle. If I shut the engine down for a few minutes the auto-revving goes away. I e-mailed BMW and the informed me to see a dealer. Unfortunately, I live in Moorpark, CA. (eastern Ventura county) the nearest dealer is in LA. They informed me they won't be able to perform a diagnostic until 12/10. Meanwhile, I have a new bike that I'm reluctant to ride. I believe that the problem is in the electronic engine management system and requires a software fix, but I'm hoping that you can assist.

I suspect a software issue is the answer. We recently have received new programming to solve this problem.
The dealer is the only way to go.
Sorry for your inconvenience.

Thanks ,Tim
'04 1150 Adventure Fuel Tank Loose?

Tim,

I have a 2004 1150 adventure and I removed the tank to hardwire some stuff. When I put the tank back on it has about 1/8 to 1/4 inch play in it even when the rubber grommets and the one bolt are in the right position and very snug. But for some reason the left side of the tank (if you are sitting on the bike) has a little play in the tank. Is this normal?

It seems like the rubber piece is too small to prevent the play.

Hi ,
I checked several of these on the showroom floor and they all have the same play you describe. The tank is designed to float this way ,not to worry.

Thanks ,Tim
K1200GT fluctuating idle
Tim,

I ran across the A&S web site, and am really impressed - I enjoy seeing technology put to good use.

I'm hoping you can give me a second opinion. I bought a new K1200GT this May from a dealer in Indianapolis, and rode it all summer. I have started to notice that the RPMs wander at idle (generally about 1200, with an occasional drop to 8-900, then it comes back up), and there is a slight occasional drop in power at a steady cruise (both with and without cruise control engaged - although it is difficult to distinguish from the cruise control throttle adjustments). It has been hard to start at least once.
Additionally, it seems to require more throttle to start from a dead stop when it is cold - I've killed it a couple times pulling into traffic. I'm no mechanic, but it seems as though it is having trouble with the air-fuel mix, or possibly fuel pump / injector issues. It seemed to get worse after the 6000 mile maintenance, when I had hoped it would be cleared up as a part of the standard checklist. I contacted the dealership, and was assured that nothing they did would have caused or worsened the issue, and was further told that this was a known defect in the engine management computer that BMW was working on a recall for, and that the same issue had already been resolved in the K1200RS. This seemed pretty suspicious to me, as my understanding is that the RS and GT are identical at that level, and I would think that any issue that had been solved in the RS could either immediately or with very little effort be used in the GT. I hate to think that the dealership is just telling me stories, and am hoping you can confirm the recall. If that isn't the case, I guess I'll try a different dealership for the 12000 mile this spring. I'm really hoping that it's just a simple adjustment. I'd bring it by in person, but it's a pretty long haul to California from Indiana. I'll definitely come by for a visit if I'm in the neighborhood, though.

I've currently got about 10,000 on the bike, and have always burned premium in it - although I've toured quite a bit, and could have easily gotten some less than ideal fuel somewhere.

I appreciate your insight.

BMW has addressed this issue. Have your dealer look at service bulletin 1300204(057) The engine control computer will need to be replaced.

Sorry for your inconvenience.
Thanks ,Tim

Tire choice for K1200RS
I am looking at replacing tires on my K1200RS (1998 - 5.0 Rear Rim)

I am looking for a tire that will last at least 6K. Most of my riding is 80% touring dry weather, 20% sport.

I am looking at the following tires, do you have any recommendations:

Michelin Pilot Road
Michelin MACADAM 90 X or 100X
Dunlop D208

I haven't had much luck with Metzler tires.

Thanks in advance,

We like the Metzler Z6 the best. Our next choice is the Bridgestone BT020. We install more tires than any BMW dealer in the USA , we hope this will be helpful.

Thanks ,Tim
What silver is that?
I have a 1997 R1100RS. I need a new right side valve cover. I called parts and it seems that there were two different colors (zwsl silver or esl silver) used from 94-99. How do I figure out which color I have without holding each next to my bike?
You have the ESL silver. We can ship you both just to be sure. Send back the one you don't need. It is possible the cover has been changed over the years. Both colors are almost identical.

Thanks ,Tim

Running lights out of turn signals?

I want to convert my signal only lights - front and rear - to full-time 'on' running lights and signal light. Bike is BMW-Montauk 2004 with ABS, and I hear this mod can affect the ABS sensor. Will it - and if not, which units do I purchase?
Also, what brand and style lights do you recomend for extra driving or so called 'fog' lights? And where would you place them?

Thank you in advance...

We sell a product that will convert your signals ,this will work fine with your ABS. Click here to find out more.

We recommend Motolights ,they mount on the brake caliper bolts, this is a high quality product with a great warranty.

Thanks ,Tim
Winter storeage for K1200LT on a jack
I own a '05 K1200LT. I need to put it up for storage for the winter--living in Chicago necessitates storage. I have owned many bikes and usually I would store them by placing the bike on a motorcycle jack - ie Duwell brand jack. Looking at the underside of the bike the skid plate and protection brackets for the center stand are very prominent! I realize that I would have to remove some of the lower faring to have access to the engine for a contact point for the jack but what about that skid plate system? Is it strong enough to support the weight of the bike? My current resolution --until I hear from you--is to store the bike on its centerstand and place a piece of wood under the front tire keeping it off of the damp concrete. If it is useless to attempt using the motorcycle jack--can I use a small scissor jack at the skid plate brackets to raise the front tire off the ground. I also heard that bias ply tires can develop a flat spot over the storage period. In advance, thanks for your help.
Just a note to your organization. I find it easier to order from you than go to my local dealer--15 miles away-- who has very little in stock and would order it anyway so I can then make a return trip to pick it up. Ordering from your dealer, wait a little and open my door and pick it up. It's easy to do business with your dealership.
A small scissor jack will work fine. No need to pull the skid pan ,a small piece of wood between the jack and the oil filter cover will be all you need.

Thanks ,Tim
Converting to synthetic oil?
Tim:

At what point (after how many miles) can I convert from mineral oil to synthetic oil in my '04 R1150RT? 3,000? 6,000?

Thanks,

6,000 would be fine.
This will give it a chance to fully break in.

Thanks ,Tim
Clutch Concerns on used K1200RS
I bought a used 98 K1200RS with 58K miles. The original owner have replaced tires, plugs, valves adjusted, fluids flushed, as well as new battery. The only thing he left out was to replace the "clutch".
He claimed that it is still in a very good condition and I felt like it is.

Although, with such high milage (I used to have Japanese's and at 34K miles, it is time to for a bike) I am wondering how involve it is to replace the clutch. I would like to do the work myself and I am familar with automotives and Japaneses motorcycles clutches. I have never done the BMW.

Should I take it to my local BMW dealer or can I do the job myself without any problem. Oh, I do have a maintaince manual on a CD. It doesn't tell how to take apart but does show the parts arrangment.

thanks,

First of all wait until the clutch starts showing signs of slippage.
Installing a clutch is a difficult and time consuming operation.
This is a job for a certified BMW tech. half the motorcycle must be disassembled to do this.

Thanks ,Tim

"Chirping" from a '76/6?
I have a 1976 R90/6. When the bike reaches operating temperature it has a chirping noise (at idle),that does not seem to come from either cylinder.
I have looked at motor mounts, tank mounting and every external piece I could think of. I did have someone tell me it could be an oil breather. Does this seem likely? What other steps should I take to locate this problem? It seems to go away at increased rpm, but it may just be covered up by exhaust noise. Thanks in advance.
The oil breather is the source of your noise.

Try keeping the oil level half way down the stick.
This can minimize the noise.

As the engine wears crankcase pressure increases which adds to the volume of air going through the breather.

Replace the breather or update it ,it is located under the top engine cover.

Thank ,Tim

Oil Consumption in '78 100/7
Greetings Tim, last yr. i bought a 1978 100/7 rs with 15000 k and it looks like it's true by the shape it's in. anyhow it uses much to much oil. i have had bmw's since 69 and they all used oil when riding hard on trips. this baby is eating up a i/2 qt. or more every time i ride a couple hundred miles. no leaks or smoke but a little build up on the pugs. second owner said it came into states as the belgium police model # 6092794 . bike runs well warmed up, but rough till warmed up. would you please offer your help into a fix besides a motor tear down if any ? where could i find out how many were made like this model for the uk? thank you.
Keep the oil level half way down the stick. Use 20/50 oil If it still is using that much oil ,disassemble the top end. You will find worn valve guides ,rings ,bore etc.

For police model info. you will need to contact a BMW dealer in the UK.

Thanks ,Tim
Adjusting throttle assembly for proper Throttlemeister fit.
i'm trying to adjust my throttle to correctly adjust for the throttlemeister that I purchased recently from a previous owner. Are there any instructions on how to do this in hardcopy? I've tried to remove the bolts on the throttle but can't seem to adjust it correctly (really can't seem to adjust the throttle at all at this point). As a result, the throttlemesiter does not work at all.
On your 02 1150 RT you must move the right control on the handlebar. There are three phillips screws one on the switch that must be removed ,one on the front one on the face and one underneath.
Once you remove this you then can loosen the allen pinch bolt on the control and slide this on the handlebar.

Thanks ,Tim
Smell after new engine replacement?
Tim,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. I recently purchased a 02 R1150RT. The bike has 15K miles with a new engine replacement under warranty. After riding, I smell the odor of cooked or burnt sugar. I can't pin down the location but suspect the catalytic converter? Any ideas what is causing the odor?
I suspect the new engine is painted ,as it gets hot the paint will smell ,sweet.
This will go away in time.
The converter will smell like rotten eggs and this smell will only come out of the end of the exhaust pipe.

Thanks ,Tim
R1150GS ABS Pump Warning Lights
MY 2000 R1150 GS, W/17K MILES SHOWS ABS PUMP FAULT AND FLASHING LITES WON'T GO OUT. BIKE IS OUT OF WARRANTY,NEW PUMP IS $1600.00 ! BIKE HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED AND SERVICED AT AUTHORIZED DEALER. IS ANYONE LISCENSED TO SERVICE OR REPAIR THESE PUMPS,DOES BOSCH{?} HAVE EXCHANGE PROGRAM ? ABS WAS AN OPTION,WHAT ABOUT REMOVING SYSTEM ? THE COST IS A DEFINATE CONSIDERATION,BUT I'M TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO KEEP MY POSITIVE ATTITUDE ABOUT BMW BIKES AFTER BEING HIT WITH A COST LIKE THIS ON SOMETHING THAT SITS STATIC AND NOT SUBJECT TO REGULAR WEAR AND TEAR. I'VE RIDDEN NEARLY 35 YEARS AND MOSTLY ON BMW'S AND HAVE NEVER HAD ONE SERIOUS PROBLEM W/ ANY BMW BEFORE. THANKS
The unit can not be serviced. There is no exchange or rebuild options. If you are sure the unit is defective replacement is the only way to go.
Your dealer may be able to help you with some goodwill warranty. The ABS can be removed but that would be very expensive also and would devalue the bike.

Thanks ,Tim
