2010-07-13 "What's an Anti-Concours?"

At this years BMW MOA International Rally in Redmond Oregon they'll be celebrating 30 year of the GS. In a unique and appropriate tribute to the GS series, BMW is sponsoring an "Anti-Concours."
Just as the GS threw all rules out the window, the Anti-Concours does the same. Machines are evaluated by judges not on beauty but on utility; not on slavish fidelity to the original factory model but rather on the originality and the practical effectiveness of adaptations made to it; not on how pristine the machine is but how hard and how far it has been ridden.
These Areas define the GS experience: Practicality, Endurance, Performance and Worldliness. Entries within each Category can qualify and win in more than one Area, depending on the total attributes of the machine. There are potentially 16 first place winners (four per category), 16 second place winners and 16 third place winners.
Check out these categories:
Most Distracted: frowned upon in a traditional "concours
d'elegance" as hideous or
jury-rigged distractions to the purity of the motorcycle designer's vision, but
we love them. The best "Most Distracted" GS has a multitude of accessories,
rider's aids or just plain farkles to optimize the practicality of the ride:
the more of them and the crazier they are - the better. Provided that they work.
Hard Core: we all know what "hard core" means because it's at the heart of what a GS
is all about. The true "Hard Core" GS is the epitome of endurance; that is ridden far,
ridden hard, ridden well and shows it, yet is maintained and not on its last legs, but
ready for more. In short: it demands respect.
High Performance: set up for racing, pure and simple. Modified and stripped down to
be as effective as possible, as quick as possible and as rugged as possible under the
demands of off-road (or yes, even track) performance. The best GS in the "High
Performance" is not merely ready to race; it has raced and has a record to prove it.
World-Ready: defines "adventure touring" as no other bike ever has. Not merely
ready to explore the planet with all of the adaptations that long-distance riding far from
civilization requires, but in fact has already done so. Hence the ideal "World-Ready"
GS isn't merely blistered with the tourist stickers of countless nations on its panniers,
it has the native fauna and flora of every one of those countries still stuck to the grill.
